Teaching resources to support book talk

The teachers involved in these case studies were introduced to approaches to promoting book talk which had been developed and used in Devon over several years. The Video Conferencing and Wide Reading Pack provides a suggested structure with support materials for each stage:

  • What kind of reader am I? Choosing books
  • First responses: likes, dislikes, puzzles & patterns
  • Book conversations: questioning and responding

Shadowing the Carnegie

Many schools in England regularly base work in Key Stage 3 on this annual children's book award. Devon has produced and trialled a set of teaching materials which help students make judgements about books shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. The teaching sequence incorporates a range of uses for video conferencing.

Wider reading (2005)

Building on the Carnegie experience, Devon set up a wider reading pilot involving six secondary schools and developed further teaching materials for Key Stage 3 students. Case studies from the schools involved outline the approaches they used and evaluate the impact. Some included additional teaching materials.
