Videoconferencing

Videoconferencing equipment

The term videoconferencing covers everything from a webcam to a group videoconferencing system. A webcam, which sits on top of a computer, enables two people to communicate with each other reasonably effectively, although the quality can be variable. A group videoconferencing system, which links to an interactive whiteboard, plasma screen or television, enables larger groups of people to communicate using higher quality audio and video.

Schools wanting to videoconference will need to acquire the necessary equipment.

  • A webcam will cost around £50. Used with a headset and a piece of software like Polycom PVX, this will provide a surprisingly good quality one to one link.
  • With a USB mic/speaker costing about £50 this system can support small group work. You could also use your school’s camcorder instead of a webcam if you wanted a better quality picture.
  • Add a pan/tilt/zoom camera like this one and link it to a whiteboard or plasma screen and you have a pretty sophisticated system suitable for group and whole class work.
  • A basic, ‘standalone’ group videoconferencing system like this one will cost between £2000 - £2500.
  • There are also ‘refurbished’ group systems on the market which are well worth considering at around the £1000 mark. The DMEC is currently offering a ‘package’ which includes a Polycom Viewstation EX, with installation and training for £1300.

Group videoconferencing systems are produced by a range of manufacturers including:

Videoconferencing systems are not sold directly by the manufacturers, but by authorised resellers. A search on Google will come up with dozens. The key is always decide which system you want and then to get at least three quotations for it. As well as the price make sure you find out how long the manufacturers warranty is and what after-sales service the reseller is offering free of charge. Some resellers also offer packages of support for sale which you need to look at very carefully before purchasing.

If you would like some advice on which systems are the best for classroom work and where to go for quotations, you’re welcome to contact the dMEC.
